Description
MACHINE TYPE:
Hot plate, Brand: Socrel, Model: DS 37.
APPLICATION SECTOR:
Pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic, food, dietary, medical devices, manufacturing.
FEATURES:
The platform (Socrel DS37) was maintained at 55.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C and the exposure time was 45 s. The behavior was video recorded and analyzed by an ethogram and a software package. Each parameter of the model (frequency, duration, and latency for the first occurrence) was quantified. Cluster and Markov analyses were also employed, obtained respectively with a dendrogram and a Markov chain. The ethogram consisted of twelve patterns: immobile sniffing, foot sniffing, grooming, licking front paws, licking back paws, washing face, cleaning body, stamping, detaching the rear, resting posture, jumping down, and freezing. The cluster analysis indicated that the most frequent patterns could be classified into three categories: sniffing responses (immobile sniffing, foot sniffing), patterns evoked by primitive pollution (front paws, foot licking, stamping), and escape responses evoked by pain (hanging position, jumping out). The withdrawal of the back legs would be an independent harmful evocation pattern and freezing a behavior of alertness. Ethological information could be useful to better clarify the effects on rat behavior of pharmacological treatment or other phenomena during the hot plate test.
