The chiller (refrigerator or refrigeration unit) is a thermal machine that, by exploiting the compression and expansion of specific gases, known as refrigerants (ammonia or freon, a chemical compound derived from methane and ethane and belonging to the family of alkyl halides, improperly also called chlorofluorocarbons, CFC), allows to remove heat from a fluid, very often water. They are commonly used in process industries and in industrial temperature control applications, where the production process requires reaching and maintaining very low temperatures and high levels of cooling.
